Yachad BBG BBYO Dictionary

Board:

 

N’siah:

  • President of the chapter

  • Oversees the board

  • Runs chapter and board meetings

 

S’ganit:

  • Vice president of the chapter

  • Head of programming

  • Takes on the N’siah’s duties when she is unavailable

 

MIT Mom:

  • In charge of recruitment of new members and retainment of current members

  • Implements education about board into programs

  • Plans MIT rush and Intake Night

 

Sh’licha:

  • Incorporates Judaism and Israel education into programs

  • Leads Havdalah  

  • Plans community service and Shabbat programs

 

Mazkirah:

  • Sends out weekly comms

  • Manages all social media platforms

  • Helps with chapter videos, websites, etc.

 

Gizborit:

  • Treasurer of chapter

  • Designs merchandise

  • Plans I$F program and fundraisers

 

Sunshine Girl:

  • Brings general positivity to chapter

  • Writes thank-you notes to program hosts

  • Creates convention survival kits


 

Larger Events/Programs:

 

Sweetheart Heartthrob:

  • Sweetheart Heartthrob Dance

  • Nice clothes worn

 

Kickoff Dance:

  • The beginning of a new BBYO year/term

  • Chapter jerseys or casual clothes worn

 

Spirit Day:

  • Chapter prepares song, dance, costume, banner, etc.

  • Competitions of which chapter is best

 

Convention:

  • Overnight retreat

  • Usually costs money

 

RC:

  • Regional Convention

  • Inclusive to all members within the region

  • At a hotel

 

NMW:

  • New Member Weekend

  • Any new member can attend this convention one time

  • At a camp

 

Council Convention:

  • Inclusive to all members within DC council

  • If attending, you will help chapter vote for the council board

  • At a camp

 

IC:

  • International Convention

  • Inclusive to BBYO members from around the world

  • Location varies


 

CLTC:

  • Chapter Leadership Training Conference

  • 12 day overnight summer program

  • Inclusive to all 9th-10th graders

  • Located in Poyntelle, Pennsylvania

 

ILTC:

  • International Leadership Training Conference

  • 18 day overnight summer program

  • Inclusive to all 10th-11th graders

  • At a camp

  • Learn about leadership both inside and outside of BBYO

 

Kallah:

  • International Kallah

  • 20 day overnight summer program

  • Inclusive to all 10th-12th graders from around the world

  • At a camp

  • Learn about Judaism

 

ILSI:

  • International Leadership Seminar in Israel

  • 3 week overnight summer program

  • Inclusive to all 10th-12th graders

  • Learn about leadership and Israel by traveling around the state

  • Get about 6 community service hours

 

Slang and Abbreviations:

 

  • B’nai B’rith Youth Organization (BBYO): Jewish youth organization composed of chapters

  • BBG: B’nai B’rith Girl, the female subcategory of BBYO

  • AZA: Aleph Zadik Aleph, the male subcategory of BBYO

  • FT: Fall term, the first half of the year with newly elected board members

  • ST: Spring term, the second half of the year with newly elected board members

  • MIT: Member in training

  • Chair: Assistant to a board member after being selected by turning in an application

  • Caucus: The process in which someone declares to the N’siah of the chapter that they are running for a given board position

  • States: The N’siah finishes their term and inducts the new board, speeches are given and the program is planned around the N’siah

  • Lives: The seniors in a chapter hand down their BBYO merch/candles and reflect on their time in the chapter

  • Inductions: The official process becoming a member of a chapter, council or region

  • NRE: Northern Region East, consisting of DC Council, Baltimore Council, and NoVA Council

  • I$F: International Service Fund, raises money for BBYO scholarships

  • Good and Welfare: A designated time for each BBG to share their issues or feelings uninterrupted, everything said is confidential

  • Spooey: Pretzels dipped in frosting (often eaten at conventions)

  • Chofesh: Free time during a convention

  • Shuk: When chapters sell merchandise at conventions, this word means “marketplace” in Hebrew
